Toi Te Rito Maihi was a respected Māori artist and weaver whose practice spanned traditional and contemporary forms. She began weaving during the 1970 and exhibited widely from the 1970s onwards, with her work represented in major national collections including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
Recognised as an expert in her field, she was the master weaver for Kohewhata Marae in Kaikohe and contributed significantly to the documentation and revitalisation of Māori textile arts. She was a key contributor to Whatu Kākahu: Māori Cloaks (2011), the publication accompanying Kahu Ora, Te Papa’s landmark exhibition on Māori cloaks.
