Collective(s):
Phil Mokaraka Berry is a Māori contemporary artist based in Tairawhiti whose practice explores whakapapa, pūrākau, and the lived experiences of whānau wellbeing and recovery. Working across painting and visual storytelling, his work draws on mātauranga Māori and atua narratives to examine identity, resilience, and connection to whenua and wairua.
His artworks often centre Mana Wāhine, ancestral relationships, and the restorative potential of cultural knowledge, bridging traditional narrative frameworks with contemporary expression. Through a grounded, kaupapa-driven approach, he creates pieces that invite reflection, dialogue, and healing, positioning art as both cultural expression and community connection. His practice continues to evolve through engagement with indigenous narrative, symbolism, and creative exploration, contributing to contemporary Māori visual discourse and community-led kaupapa.
