Ngahina Hohaia (born 1975) is a renowned New Zealand visual artist, specialising in weaving, painting, and installation art. Of Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Moeahu, Ngāti Haupoto, and Greek descent, Hohaia draws deeply on her whakapapa and dual heritage
She earned a Master’s degree in Māori Visual Arts from Toioho ki Āpiti in 2009, and has since been recognised with prominent awards: the Arts Foundation New Generation Award in 2010 and the Te Waka Toi Ngā Karapihi award in 2007 .
Hohaia’s art often engages with the history and spirit of Parihaka, employing traditional fibres (blankets, silks, metals) in contemporary forms—such as jewellery, adornments, sculpture, and multimedia installations. Her works are held in national collections—such as Te Papa’s He poi manu (2012), embodying themes of intergenerational trauma and resilience rooted in Parihaka’s legacy Ngahina Hohaia is a powerful contemporary Māori artist, blending ancestral fibre techniques with modern mediums to explore collective memory, identity, and healing through art.
