Nancy Brunning was a pioneering Māori actor, director, and storyteller whose legacy continues to influence Aotearoa’s stage and screen. Known for her powerful performances and deep cultural integrity, Brunning played leading roles in landmark productions such as What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and Nga Wahine, bringing Māori narratives to the forefront of New Zealand’s performing arts.
As a director, she championed kaupapa Māori theatre, shaping groundbreaking works that centred te reo Māori, tikanga, and Māori perspectives. Through her company Hāpai Productions and her collaborations across the sector, Brunning nurtured emerging talent and helped redefine Māori representation in the arts.
