John Turi-Tiakitai is an arts and cultural advisor, kaiako, and practitioner of raranga and whatu. His work spans teaching, programme development, and the transmission of toi Māori knowledge.
His relationship with Te Rōpū Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa and Toi Māori Aotearoa was established during his time as Cultural Development Manager at New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. He later held a leadership role in arts programmes at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Rotorua, where he contributed to the development of the weaving arts degree.
Turi-Tiakitai has worked alongside leading practitioners including Edna Pahewa and Christina Wirihana on a number of exhibitions and publications, including He Hekenga nō Ngā Tūpuna (2018), Te Ringa Rehe: The Legacy of Emily Schuster (2017), and Whiria: Weaving Global Connections (2015).
His practice focuses on whatu pūreke and pākē, traditional rain capes that have seen renewed interest. Through his work, he supports the continuation and application of weaving knowledge within contemporary contexts.
